Guide to creating the promotional video
A course preview is like a movie trailer. This is a video of up to 2 minutes that appears on the course homepage to help students understand what you are teaching and specifically how you are teaching it. We tested and looked at hundreds of course previews to find out what makes previews so special. Below, we have prepared a second guide on how to make your videos effective.
Course Image Placeholder
Start with a slide that shows your course image or brand for the first 3 seconds. This gives students time to fully expand the video player and adjust the volume.
Instructor's Greeting and Introduction
In the next 20 seconds, you should introduce your course to potential students with a sentence explaining why you are a trusted instructor.
Tip: Try inserting a video where you speak directly into the camera. You can always use your phone's camera if you want.
Benefits
In the next 20 seconds, describe the benefits of the course and what students can do after completing it. Give students examples of specific skills to master rather than abstract concepts of what they need to learn.
Identify the main learning objectives
Describe how the course is structured and list (don't write) the main topics covered. This should happen in the next 20 seconds.
Be careful not to overcomplicate the details of what you are discussing. Don't teach anything yet, make a list of what you are going to teach. Remember the learning objectives .
Description of the ideal student
Character Generator: To define the ideal student profile for your course, consider four dimensions:
- Function: How does this student profile work in your professional and personal life?
- Hopes and Anxieties: What goals does this student profile want to achieve? What concerns does this student profile have?
- Challenges: What challenges does this student profile face when trying to achieve their goals?
- Outcome: "We designed this course for engineers who want to understand the basics of project management without getting into the details of certifications."
Last 10 seconds
In the last 10 seconds of the video, invite students to sign up or try the free preview to learn more.
Tips:
Don't go over 2 minutes. Ideally, 90 seconds.
