Importance of learning objectives

In many cases, students are committed to taking your courses. They will invest their time and, if they have paid for the course, their money, and they will expect to learn something in return. You need to create courses that meet the needs of your ideal students. Your student may be trying to find a job, improve their skills in their current role, or learn specific skills that will help them complete a project. Learning objectives are used to determine what students will be able to do by the end of the course. They should be demonstrable, meaning students can show that they have achieved the learning objectives through action, and quantifiable, meaning what students have learned can be measured through assessment.

For example: "You will be able to make constructive contributions to your peers using the SCI (Situation, Behavior, Impact) technique ." Students can demonstrate that they have achieved this goal by writing comments using this technique, and teachers can read the comments for evaluation.

Guidelines for writing learning objectives

When writing learning objectives, you first list the key concepts students need to understand or the skills they need to develop to master the course topic. Then, determine the level of understanding students need to demonstrate for each concept or skill. Bloom's Taxonomy is a general framework that outlines six levels of understanding: remember, understand, apply, analyze, evaluate, and assess. You then use descriptive verbs that match the level of understanding to explain what students will be able to do and write your learning objectives. To get started writing your goals, you can follow this formula:

1. Identify the concepts or skills you want your students to learn. Example: Add a function in Excel.

2. Determine the level of understanding you want your students to demonstrate. Bloom's Taxonomy identifies six levels of understanding: recall, comprehend, apply, analyze, evaluate, and create. Example: Use the sum function to add numbers in a column.

3. Choose the verb that will be used to demonstrate and identify the behavior at the appropriate learning level. Example: Using the addition function.

4. Add more criteria to indicate how and when results can be demonstrated to give students more context. Example: Sum your quarterly sales using Excel's Sum function.

Using learning objectives to structure lessons

Learning objectives shouldn't be seen as a series of activities or an endless list of concepts to cover in a course. Rather, they are actions that students can take to demonstrate that they have learned something. Create as many learning objectives for the course as necessary to describe what students will be able to accomplish by the end of the course. Just be yourself. Learning objectives should accurately describe the content of the course. You can then create a course outline based on these objectives.
